Job description:
The primary purpose of the Advanced Practice Nurse position is to:
Promotes and maintains the psychiatric and mental health of the patient across the institution. Functions in an expanded role, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, social workers, dietitians, clergy, etc. to provide for assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs along with relevant education who might benefit from psychiatric interventions, either by way of medication or therapy. Conducts comprehensive health assessments, identifies normal/abnormal health characteristics, develops treatment plans, initiates appropriate care, and continuously evaluates outcomes. Care is delivered to psychiatric patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings to offer skills in prevention of and intervention with psychiatric problems, offer crisis intervention for acutely distressed patients or families, and to provide psychotherapy treatment for oncology patients and families as well as other assigned tasks and responsibilities.

To provide individual psychiatric assessment and treatment for inpatient and outpatient oncology patients and their families while receiving treatment/care at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Affects direct patient/client care throughout MDACC according to the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and adherence to the Standards of Nursing Care and policies and procedures of the institution..


Works collaboratively with Psychiatry faculty and clinical providers to provide medication management for patients, assist in management of patients with psychosocial or psychiatric problems, and assist in management of staff distress.

Psychiatric assessment of cancer patients and their families in the inpatient and outpatient settings including: assess, treat and monitor psychosocial and psychiatric problems and disorders.
Provides psychiatric and psychosocial treatment to patients and their families including counseling and psychotherapy, behavioral techniques and other interventions in individual, group, marital and family psychotherapy settings.

Provide education to the patient and his/her family as well as participates in formal and internal instruction of nursing and medical students, trainees, fellows, professional nurses or other health professionals.

Interacts via telephone with patients, families, pharmacies and hospital staff.
Serves as liaison between Psychiatry and other services

Contributes to research efforts of the department and applies pertinent research to clinical practice.
Job Description-Requirements EDUCATION
Master's Degree in Nursing. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an-Advanced Practice Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Board of Nurse Examiner (BNE) authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and/or patient population

Required: Written authorization from the State of Texas BNE to function as an Advanced Practice Nurse.

Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas BNE. Failure to obtain APN recognition in accordance with guidelines from the State of Texas BNE , OR to obtain limited prescriptive authority (if required), will result in termination of employment.

Required: Two years clinical nursing.
Preferred: Experience in Psychiatry.
